TENTATIVE ITINERARY
Day 1
We depart from Manchester and our initial visit is the Lancashire cotton town of Wigan, made famous by George Orwell in his 1939's study ‘The Road to Wigan Pier.’ This is a very interesting stop as these towns are often neglected on the tourist trail. If you’ve time before your arrival, why not read Martin Cruz’s Rose as a wonderful and entertaining way of learning about the harsh realities of Victorian life in the cotton towns.
Our destination is the Lake District. Over the next few days, we'll visit the homes of famed authors - Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, Cockermouth and Rydal Mount, his last home where we can admire the grounds he lovingly landscaped, and Beatrix Potter's Sawrey Hilltop Farm and Yew Tree Cottage. We'll also see Ruskin's preserved Victorian home at Brantwood. Naturally, as these are set amidst the beauty of the Lakes, breathtaking scenery will be part and parcel of each day!
NIGHT STOP: Lakes
Day 2
Today we have a full day discovering and sharing the vistas that so inspired the area’s literary tradition. We simply have to use the cliché 'breathtaking' to describe the spectacular scenery you'll be seeing as it is so very appropriate.
In keeping with our literary theme, we can also visit the pencil museum. Did you know that the graphite for pencils uniquely comes from the Lakeland?
NIGHT STOP: Lakes
Day 3
Departing the Lakes, we'll take a beautifully scenic route through the Lancashire Dales, calling in at a few towns en-route to Haworth; there’s Ingleton and the small, nearby parish church where Arthur Conan Doyle wed, Settle and possibly Mytholmroyd, if we’ve Ted Hughes fans aboard. The dramatic moorland we see today inspired the Bronte Sisters to pen their novels that are some of the classics of English literature.
In our explorations of Haworth, you'll be able to imagine the everyday lives of the Bronte Sisters as you walk around Haworth Church, the village and their home, now the Bronte Parsonage Museum.
From here, alas, we must make our way back into Manchester.
NIGHTSTOP: London (own account, not included in tour price. Accommodation is available for a supplemental fee.)
