Literary Heritage Tours

Literary Heritage Tours are general sightseeing tours with an extra layer incorporating where authors lived, worked and were inspired. It is quite an experience to stand in the place described in your favorite novel, images leaping from the page! Some people get so excited, for them it is a pilgrimage. There is also plenty for those with a more casual interest. We incorporate a few film sites for fun too!

Our literary tours visit sites you would probably visit anyway – stately homes, gardens, iconic places like Stonehenge and Bath - the theme is almost an excuse to get more in depth, including some lesser known gems that visitors might miss otherwise.

There are simply so many Literary Heritage Tour itineraries that SGT has broken them into sub-categories to help filter through the plentiful choices:

Literary Landscapes - settings that inspired great literature  Stand in the places that inspired your favorite authors. Much of the UK's countryside remains unchanged so you may find your inside your favourite novel.

Literary Inspirations - Author Trails  Get in depth focusing mainly on one author of interest. These are well rounded touring adventures but your favorite author is 'the thread.' Recently we've pushed it a bit broader and have included shows like Downton Abbey.

Classic Routes - Clasical Britain PLUS a special interest focus layer  SGT's The Classic Route collection of tours visit places that are on everyone's 'must see list' - like Bath, Canterbury, Stratford-Upon-Avon, York - but we take it a bit deeper, using a special theme to plot our route to create a richer touring experience.

Don't see what you are looking for from our suggested samples here? Please get in touch and ask! Literary Heritage tours are among are most popular and SGT creates dozens of literary themed custom trips each year. We would be delighted to help you too!

Devon & Cornwall – West Country Writers, the ‘Mystery Writers Trail’

October 07th - October 12th 2018
September 29th - October 04th 2019

This tour is not just for the literary minded, as this is a region with much to offer visitors!

The English counties of Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Somerset, collectively known as ‘The West Country,’ offer a rich tapestry of literary heritage. Here are the brooding settings for the mystery stories of 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Miss Marple,' the sea side intrigue of Rebecca, mystical King Arthur legends and the still charming landscapes of a time gone by.

If you’ve enjoyed the stories of Jane Austen, Daphne du Maurier, Agatha Christie, Thomas Hardy and Arthur Conan Doyle then this is the tour for you, taking you through the inspirational landscapes for their novels.

For lovers of countryside there are rolling downs, rugged seascapes, atmospheric moorlands and the lush, green country that is so representative of England. Gourmets will die for the cream teas, real Cornish pasties, freshly caught seafood and farmhouse cooking. You’ll never forget the narrow country lanes where the hedgerows grow higher than the cars, the villages where it’s difficult for bicycles to pass let alone other motorized vehicles, the thatched cottage hamlets and small fishing harbors accessible only on foot. This is a true feast for all of the senses!

Our tour will visit some highlights of the English counties of Hampshire and Heart of England, the region famous for the Cotswolds villages and some of the countries’ best gardens. Both regions offer quite a number of worthy attractions in their own right, our tour adds in the fun bonus of exploring their Jane Austen connections too. In Search of That By Wizard: Harry Potter tour

Custom trip - As you please!

What a fantastic opportunity to visit England with the ‘kids’ or ‘grandkids’, introduce them to British culture, history and literature, while at the same time discovering the world of J K Rowling and Harry Potter through visits to film locations and sites and attractions associated with the boy-wizard and friends. Our memorable, fun-filled and magical tour has it all! Yes, there’s 'Hogwarts School' and a taste of riding a ‘Hogwarts Express’. There are Harry’s feathered friends, witches and fairies. There are giants (you!), ghosts, and a flight across London’s rooftops… All this and visits to the historic cities of Gloucester and Oxford. You’ll see fabulous castles, timeless villages and prehistoric temples. You’ll explore beneath the depths of the earth in deep caves and caverns and discover, too, the works of other marvelous, magical writers and their creations. We bring alive, through a selection of visits, Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, J R R Tolkien’ ‘Lord of the Rings’, C S Lewis ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, Kenneth Graham’s ‘Wind in the Willows’ and the magic of the Merlin and King Arthur legends.

This is a fun tour where adult and child can share the experience.

Fans of Jane Austen might not immediately think of Ireland as a destination associated with her life or novels but all the elements are here, waiting for you to discover. Using the real life paths of three of Jane Austen’s beloved nieces, delve into the fascinating history of this area. 'Meet' three of Edward Austen Knight’s children, Marianne (May,) Cassandra (Cass) and Louisa (Lou.) As a special treat, again subject to availability, your tour can include a private "Regency style" luncheon at Ballyscullion Park hosted by driver/guide Richard, Jane Austen's seven times grand-nephew, and his wife Rosalind.

MORE ABOUT YOUR TOUR LEADER: “Belfast writer and academic Dr Sophia Hillan, formerly associate director of the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen’s University, has researched the life and times of May, Lou and Cass, their relationship with their famous aunt, how they came to reside in Donegal and, most interestingly, the way their lives came to uncannily resonate with the plots & themes of Austen’s fiction…” Read Joanne Savage’s full article here: http://www.culturenorthernireland.org/article.aspx?art_id=4532

"This is a book that keeps on giving and one which I feel Jane Austen herself would have dearly loved to read." Maggie Lane, Jane Austen Society Newsletter (Oct 2012)

"May Lou and Cass, what a marvellous book. It's a wonderful addition to Jane Austen studies. I knew nothing of any of this and I am really grateful for being enlightened." - Patricia Craig
