Historic Scotland Day to Day Suggested Driving Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive at Edinburgh Airport or Glasgow Airport and transfer to the car depot to pick up self drive car. Drive to your hotel for check in. Rest of the day, time to explore the city. Overnight in Edinburgh.
Day 2 After breakfast either some more time in Edinburgh/ Glasgow or leave in the morning and drive to the beautiful Tweed Valley in the Scottish Borders. En route, visit one of the many famous abbeys or Traquair House with its own brewery. Check in at your hotel in the Borders/ southern Scotland area.
Day 3 Scenic drive alongside the River Tweed and visit some of the many stately homes such as Abbotsford or Thirlestane Castle and abbeys such as Melrose, Dryburgh or Jedburgh. Overnight as Day 2.
Day 4 Drive north to the small market town of Perth, once the capital city of Scotland. Here pay a possible visit to Scone Palace where former Scottish kings were crowned on the ‘Stone of Destiny’. Glamis Castle is only a short drive away and makes a good afternoon visit. Overnight in Perthshire area.
Day 5 Head north again with a stop on the way at Blair Castle. Continue through the Highlands and on towards Speyside, famous for its many whiskies. Time to visit one of the many famous distilleries, like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet or Cardhu. Overnight in the wider Inverness area.
Day 6 Full day excursion to Inverewe Tropical Gardens with return journey via the east coast and visit to Dunrobin Castle. As an alternative and weather permitting we suggest a morning visit to Dunrobin Castle and in the afternoon a boat trip on the Moray Firth to spot dolphins which can be seen swimming along this coast. Overnight as Day 5.
Day 7 Drive south along Loch Ness with a stop at Urquhart Castle, an excellent viewpoint for spotting the monster! Time permitting, drive through the spectacular pass of Glencoe. Drive back along the west coast to Oban for overnight.
Day 8 Drive to Glasgow or Edinburgh and back to the car depot in order to drop off the car. Transfer to the airport for the return flight home.
