Clan Heartlands Day to Day Suggested Driving Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Edinburgh Airport. Time permitting, spend the day in Edinburgh, Scotland’s Capital city. See the elegant 18th century Georgian New Town and visit the 16th century Old Town.

Later in the afternoon, leave Edinburgh and head north and cross the impressive suspension bridge over the Forth Estuary. On to Perthshire for one night.

Day 2 Time for some sightseeing in the small market town of Perth, also to visit nearby Scone Palace, the private home of the Earl and Countess of Mansfield. Later that morning follow the A93 to Blairgowrie, the road now climbs steadily through the skiing region of Glenshee to Braemar. This is the region known as 'Royal Deeside'.  Pass Crathie, possibly stopping to see the church where the Royal Family attends Sunday service when on holiday at nearby Balmoral Castle. Overnight in the Royal Deeside/ Aberdeenshire area.

Day 3 A free day to visit one of the many Castles of the Grampian Region or travel through the Cairngorm Mountains on the A941 to Dufftown, and the Spey Valley, centre of the whisky industry in Scotland. Many of the famous Malt whiskies are produced in this region - Cardhu, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Tamdhu and Tomatin, to name only a few.

Return back to Royal Deeside/ Aberdeenshire area later that afternoon to relax.

Day 4 Travel today through the Grampian Mountains, along the A939, passing Tomintoul, the highest village in Great Britain, and on to Grantown on Spey. Here visit one of the many whisky distilleries in the area and continue to Nairn, a popular seaside resort famous for its golf course and its beautiful sandy beaches. Time permitting; a visit to Cawdor Castle can be made before arriving for next overnight stop in the Inverness area.

Day 5 In the morning maybe visit Culloden Moor, scene of the crushing defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army in 1746.  Drive south, following the shores of Loch Ness, the most famous loch in Scotland. Stopping at the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre and nearby Urquhart Castle from where sightings of the 'monster' are most frequently reported. Continue along the A82, the Caledonian Canal, along Loch Lochy to Fort Augustus and finally arrive in Fort William, situated at the foot of Ben Nevis Britain's highest mountain. Overnight in the Fort William area

Day 6 Take a scenic drive along Glen Shiel to Kyle of Lochalsh. Drive over the Skye Bridge to the beautiful Isle of Skye. Continue to Portree and visit the picturesque harbour. Discover varied wildlife of the ‘Misty Island’ and enjoy the peace of remote beaches. Time permitting, continue to the north of the island and visit Dunvegan Castle. Travel back to the mainland and overnight in Oban area.

Day 7 This morning discover Oban, a busy fishing port and departure point for the Hebridean Islands. A small picturesque town surrounded by hills and tucked inside the bay of Lorn.

You will then travel via Loch Awe to Inverary beautifully situated on the shores of Loch Fyne. Worth a visit is Inverary Castle, the home of the chiefs of the Clan Campbell, the Dukes of Argyle – the castle is closed on Fridays.

In the afternoon continue along Loch Lomond, the largest and perhaps most beautiful of all Scottish lochs.  You reach the Trossachs region, one of the most scenic regions in Scotland with its pine and heather covered hills, waterfalls and Lochs. Overnight in the Trossachs area.

Day 8 Depart for Edinburgh this morning. Drive via Stirling pausing to visit its ancient castle on the rock commanding magnificent views of the wide plains all around.
