Accommodation: The Teesdale Hotel Middleton in Teesdale, County Durham; Situated in the middle of the market town, the hotel is very comfortable, offers home cooked food and has a very friendly staff.
The Tour Itinerary:
Wednesday We meet you at Oxenholme Rail Station on the edge of the Lake District between 2:00pm and 3:00pm and drive through spectacular scenery to our hotel at Middleton in Teesdale. Before dinner there is a drinks party where you can meet your fellow guests.
Thursday Our first day out is a circular tour of Teesdale, Allendale and Weardale. Leaving after breakfast we travel to Langdon Beck and then cross the moors to St Johns Chapel in Weardale before turning into Allendale which takes us to the Abbey town of Hexham. After a stop here, we cross the moors again to the fabulous monastic village of Blanchland with over 900 years of history. From here we go into real Goat country as we cross Bolts Law to Westgate in Weardale and then over Westernhope Moor to Middleton.
Friday Today, after leaving the hotel, we drive down the valley to the great city of Durham. You will have plenty of time to explore this city and visit the Cathedral; a visit not to be missed. We leave Durham in the middle of the afternoonfor a scenic drive back to Middleton.
Saturday Our first stop today will be the lovely small town of Appleby. You will have time to explore the alleywaysand church. From here we drive on to Langwathby then to Little Salkeld andvisit Long Meg and her daughters. This monument is the largest stone circle in Cumbria. We lunch at the famous bread shop in Melmerby. After lunch we climb the famous pass of Hartside which, on a clear day offers views 200 miles north to south. Alston, highest market town in England is our next stop. Our route back to Middleton is down Teesdale.
Sunday Today we are going to combine Teesdale with the Yorkshire Dales. Leaving the hotel we drive to Brough and then on to Kirkby Stephen for a coffee stop.We then take the high road over Nine Standards and down into Swaledale. We lunch in the market town of Reeth before finishing the Swaledale drive as we reach Richmond. We spend the afternoon here before returning to Middleton.
Monday Today’s tour includes museums abbeys and castles and a lovely small town. Leaving Middleton, we drive down the valley for a visit to Bowes museum, a very special building on the side of the moors. From here we make our way the short distance to remote Egglestone Abbey. Lunch will be in the market town of Barnard Castle, with a superb selection of shops and cafes. In the afternoon we drive to Raby Castle for a conducted tour of it, well worthwhile. After an afternoon tea break, a walk in the grounds is recommended. From here we drive back to Middleton.
Tuesday On our last day we are going on the train. The famous Settle to Carlisle Line. We drive to Kirkby Stephen rail station and catch the train to Settle, travelling the most spectacular part of the route. On arrival at Settle, you have plenty of time for lunch and exploring this Dales market town. The Goat will meet you and in the afternoon we drive up Ribblesdale to see the huge railway viaduct, before making our way to Hawes for a stop. We then drive through Mallerstang and Kirkby Stephen back to Middleton. Wednesday After breakfast we transfer you to Oxenholme Rail Station for your journey home.
