World War II Italy Tour, from Sicily to Anzio and Rome
This tour heads directly from Rome Fiumicino Airport by flight to Palermo, Sicily.
Spend your first night in Palermo then continue south through Patton's Seventh Army area at Caltanissetta to the landing beaches at Licata and Gela. Discover the historic city of Siracusa (Syracuse) on the island's eastern shores, visit the War Museum in Catania and see the infamous Mount Etna before heading north to Messina.

Take in a full Cassino Battlefield Tour, including Mignano Pass, Monte Lungo, San Pietro and finishing at the famous Monastery of Montecassino.
From southern Italy, continue north through the beautiful Abruzzo National Park into the Apennines Mountains. Take an exciting cable-car ride to Gran Sasso and overnight in the mountaintop Campo Imperatore Hotel where Mussolini was held captive until his daring rescue in September 1943!
The tour concludes with a visit to the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery near Anzio. Spend your last night in Nettuno before departing for Rome airport.

Program Itinerary
Day 1: IN FLIGHT to Rome; Depart the US for Rome Fiumicino Airport.
Day 2: ROME - PALERMO
Join Alpventures® today as the tour group meets at Rome Leonardo di Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport and take an afternoon one-hour flight from Rome to Palermo, Sicily. Afternoon sightseeing in Palermo as you transfer to the hotel for check-in and dinner. Special welcome dinner and orientation tonight. Overnight Palermo. (D)
Day 3: GELA - RAGUSA
Breakfast. This morning, check out of the hotel and head south through Patton's Seventh Army area at Caltanissetta to the southern coast of the island. Lunch en route. Afternoon tour the American landing beaches at Licata and Gela. Late afternoon transfer to the hotel in Ragusa for check-in and dinner. Overnight Ragusa. (B,D)
Day 4: SYRACUSE - CATANIA - TROINA
Breakfast. Hotel check out. Today, continue along the eastern coast of Sicily to discover historic Siracusa (Syracuse). Continue north to Catania to visit the Historical War Museum of the landings in Sicily. Lunch. Transfer to Troina, the "highest town in Sicily," to see where American forces encountered their worst battle on the island. Later, afternoon transfer to Taormina for hotel check in and dinner on your own. Overnight Taormina. (B)
Day 5: MESSINA - CALABRIA
Breakfast and hotel check out. Morning transfer north to Messina for lunch and the ferry ride to Villa san Giovanni. Continue north to Castrovillari in the beautiful Pollino National Park for check-in at the hotel and dinner. Overnight Castrovillari. (B,D)
Day 6: PAESTUM - SALERNO
Breakfast. Hotel check out. Continue the journey north toward the Bay of Salerno with lunch enroute. Visit the American landing beaches and see the memorials with free time for visiting the Roman ruins of Paestum. Continue to the hotel in Salerno for check-in and dinner. Overnight Salerno. (B,D)
Day 7: SALERNO
Breakfast. Full free day for personal sightseeing, shopping or relaxing at the resort-hotel. Enjoy walking the beautiful waterside promenade overlooking the Bay of Salerno, discover the fun streets of the old town or visit the Cathedral. Some other options would be to take the scenic ride by boat to Naples, or book a private tour of Pompeii. Dinner on your own tonight. Overnight Salerno. (B)
Day 8: MONTE CASSINO
Breakfast. This morning, check out of the Salerno Hotel and continue north to Cassino for a battlefield tour of Gustav Line sites. Here, learn about the drive to the Gustav Line and battle for Cassino. Tour the Mignano Pass with stops in Monte Lungo and San Pietro Infine. Lunch. Afternoon visit to the Abbey of Montecassino (or optional 25-minute walk to the Polish War Cemetery). Late afternoon visit to the Cassino War Memorial and transfer to the hotel for check-in and dinner. Overnight Cassino. (B,D)
Day 9: GRAN SASSO
Breakfast and hotel check out this morning. Continue north with a scenic drive through the Abruzzo National Park into the remote Apennines Mountains. Lunch en route. Afternoon arrival in Fonte Cerreto to see the Villetta Inn, where Benito Musolini was imprisoned in September 1943. Continue by cable-car to Gran Sasso d'Italia. Tour of Campo Imperatore, where Mussolini was rescued by Skorzeny's Commando. Hotel check in and dinner at Campo Imperatore. Overnight Campo Imperatore. (B,D)
Day 10: LATINA - ANZIO
Breakfast. Hotel check out and transfer south to Latina to visit the impressive Piana delle Orme Museum. Lunch. Afternoon visit to the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, then continue to hotel for check-in. Relax before a special farewell dinner tonight. Overnight Nettuno. (B,D)
Day 11: ROME
Breakfast. Hotel check out and transfer to Rome and see the most significant World War II sites on a City Sightseeing Tour this morning. Lunch. Reservation Policy
A (USD) $400 deposit per person is required to book this tour. You can book online, by phone or by mail. Payment in full is due 90 days prior to tour departure and must be paid in US Dollars by certified bank check.
Cancellation Policy
Although tour cancellations are not anticipated; Alpventures reserves the right to cancel tours for any reason, prior to tour departure date, in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on Alpventures part. A full refund will be granted up to 30 days prior to tour departure. A cancellation fee of 20% of the tour price will be charged for cancellations between 30 and 20 days prior to departure date and 40% between 20 and 10 days prior to departure. No refunds will be honored within 10 days of tour departure date.
